Plastic Bag Collection

Hi!



We have received results on our school's performance in the contribution of plastic bags in the record breaking attempt - World's Largest Plastic Bag Ball Sculpture.

We would like to thank all Cedarians for your contribution as well as putting in effort to gather as many plastic bags as possible in such a short period of time. Over a span of a few weeks, we managed to collect 3516 plastic bags, which means each student has contributed about 2.7 plastic bags. This is our first time taking part in such an event and we are proud to announce that our school has emerged 6th among other schools in Singapore.

Gan Eng Seng School,which collected a total of 40856 plastic bags (average of 34 plastic bags collected per student), emerged first. We hope Cedarians would be more motivated in striving to do better in our green efforts and we believe that we can make a difference.

Once again, a big thank you to all Cedarians who have participated actively in the event, earning ourselves such a glorious achievement!

New CCA ExCo!

In order to establish ourselves as a proper CCA, it was proposed that the CCA ExCo be selected as soon as possible. The candidates were the four Secondary 2 members. Since there were four of them, each one would have a post in the ExCo. 

After much consideration by the two teachers and the Secondary 1 members, plus short interviews, it was finally decided that Grace Khoo (2M 2011) would be taking on the role of the President. Li Yuan (2M 2011) would become the Vice-President while Celine Poon (2O 2011) and Jasminejeet (2O 2011) take on the roles of the Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The newly elected CCA ExCo gave short impromptu thank-you speeches of their own and expressed their willingness to work hard and build up the foundations of the Environment Club. 

Meanwhile, the position of each member in the ExCo is not yet confirmed, since they are currently under a 6-month probation by the teachers. Updates will be given if there are any changes in the ExCo.

Let's give them support and encourage them to do their best in their new roles!

Official CCA T-shirt!

The year is coming to an end, and the members of the Environment Club spent some time during CCA sessions to come up with designs for our official CCA t-shirt!

As the Environment Club is not officially recognised by Cedarians yet (since this CCA was only established this year), we definitely hope that as we become more known to the other students next year, this t-shirt will represent us and our CCA.

In the end, we decided on a design by Lushna Gunter and Kam Ning Yih. Since the End-of-Year Examinations have finally come to an end, CCA will be resuming on Tuesdays, so watch out for the debut appearance of our CCA t-shirt!

A New Garden... IN SCHOOL?!

The Environment Club has been working on a new garden beside the Home Economics kitchens. With a border made up bricks lain by our Cedarians, the plots in the garden will feature herbs, spices and flowers! Some plants that we have decided to grow include lemon grass, orchid, sunflower and more! The students of the Environment Club are continuously putting forth suggestions on what flowers or plants we can grow in our garden. Meanwhile, the club will be putting up information on the different kinds of plants and flowers we are growing.

While the club has yet to find a name for this garden, the students will be working hard at growing new plants, so let's wish them the best of luck!

Hole for the Tree-Planting Event Successfully Dug

In preparation for this Friday's tree planting ceremony, 2A, 2M and a few other Sec 2 students worked together to dig a 1m x 1m x 1m hole at the area near the container classroom.

In the process, the 2M students found a huge rock in the ground and they were deciding whether to dig a new hole at another spot instead of moving the rock. They finally came to a decision: to move the rock. They worked hard at digging the soil around the rock, then finally lifted the rock out of the hole. 2M has decided to engrave their class name onto the rock.

After hours of hard work, everyone's efforts finally paid off when the students of 2M put the young tree into the hole. 

Congratulations and thank you, 2A, 2M and other volunteers from the Sec 2 level!

Do come down to the area to witness the ceremony this Friday at 10am!

Green Wave 2011

This year, schools around the world will plant a tree at the same time to commemorate Green Wave 2011.

As for Cedar, we've selected a rare tree, also known as Malang Malang. This tree is appropriate for parks and gardens.

Here are some special features of the tree:
- young leaves are pink, so the tree is useful as an ornamental tree
- its timber is better than teak
- roots can be used to treat rheumatic pains
- leaves can treat urinary tract infection

Why do we need to plant a tree? Trees help to reduce the greenhouse effect on Earth and also prevent soil erosion. In addition, a tree in a rainforest can house up to 2000 species of insects, fungi, birds, mammals, etc.!
